A S Ramsay Urges Support for Mental Health Awareness in Construction Sector
17/05/2024
As Mental Health Awareness Week unfolds, A S Ramsay, a leading building contractor, is stepping up to address the pressing issue of mental well-being in the construction industry. With more than 50% of construction workers admitting to dealing with mental health challenges.
Established by the Mental Health Foundation in 2001, Mental Health Awareness Week aims to combat stigma and promote understanding of mental health issues. A S Ramsay is aligning itself with this mission, recognising the importance of prioritising mental well-being.
Shockingly, recent data from the Office for National Statistics unveiled that in 2021 alone, 507 individuals from the construction industry died by suicide. Stress, depression, and anxiety also accounted for nearly a quarter of reported ill-health cases across the sector between 2020 and 2023.
At the A S Ramsay AGM Meeting earlier this year, Mental Health Awareness was one of the key topics discussed, addressing the importance of prioritising employee well-being and implementing measures to support mental health in the workplace.
Jamie Godman, Managing Director at A S Ramsay, commented, “At A S Ramsay, the mental health of our team is a top priority. We value each worker's well-being and are dedicated to supporting them. Initiatives such as Mental Health Awareness Week are just one way we demonstrate our commitment to ensuring a healthy and supportive workplace for all.”
A S Ramsay promotes open conversations and aims to remove the stigma around mental health issues commonly faced in construction. Some support services include:
- The Lighthouse Club: A dedicated organisation focused on improving the welfare and well-being of the construction community, providing free and proactive services to support employees and their families.
- 24/7 Confidential Helpline: Offering assistance in multiple languages, this helpline covers emotional, physical, and financial well-being, catering to everyone on construction sites, including subcontractors and agency workers.
- Self-support app: The 'Construction Industry Helpline' app serves as a comprehensive resource for well-being, offering information, coping strategies, and access to over 3000 accredited organisations for support.
- Text HardHat: A 24/7 service providing immediate access to text-based counselling for individuals in need.
- Wellbeing Masterclasses: Scheduled CPD Accredited sessions covering a range of topics, including stress management, resilience building, mindfulness, and financial management.
- Lighthouse Beacons: Volunteer centres facilitating confidential discussions and support for those facing life challenges, fostering a sense of community and solidarity.
Additionally, industry accreditation specialist CHAS is pushing for mental health assessments to become a standard part of the prequalification process. A S Ramsay, approved by CHAS, stands in support of this initiative, recognising the importance of prioritising mental health within the construction industry.
