The Challenge

  • The existing façade had been coated with a cheap waterproof coating as the building suffered from leaks due to poor detailing.
  • Parts of the building overhang the Thames so access was difficult.
  • The building had a stepped design, with many roof terraces so scaffold design and calculations were key.
  • Works were very intrusive to residents.

What We Did

  • We had to use a mixture of non-pollutant varnish/paint stripper to loosen the material and use DOFF to remove it whilst temporarily repairing vulnerable areas prone to water ingress and carrying out a permanent repair on completion.
  • Liaised with residents regularly to check there was no water ingress, use of roof terraces, ensure windows were closed etc.
  • Carried out works over the river via rope access. Working times were limited to only when the tide was out.
  • Keeping on top of the mess that arises from the DOFF cleaning.
  • Phasing scaffolding and ensuring continuity of works.

Why Was It A Success

  • Building is now free of coating so future maintenance is far easier and leaks are easily detectable.
  • All historic leaks have been resolved.
