The Challenge

Replacing 50 metres of dangerous wax paper insulated cable that had broken down, which was supplying power to the entire building.
Minimising the power downtime while works were being carried out.
Replacement of sub mains cables to all 15 apartments, installation of new 200 amp isolator, installation of new Ryfield board and removal of enclosure containing connections to existing sub mains cables while minimising power downtime.
Liaison with residents to ensure smooth switchover to new cabling ensuring that disruption was kept to an absolute minimum.

What We Did

We liaised with all residents and informed them of the phasing and power down times well in advance.
Carried out the replacement of existing mains cable with new 95mm 5 core SWA, a very heavy cable which was extremely difficult to manoeuvre and bend into place, around some very tight bends and runs.
Replaced all sub mains cables to apartments with little to no disruption.
Power down was meticulously and carefully reduced to two 6-hour time slots meaning residents were under no circumstances left without power overnight.
All penetrations through brickwork along with any damage resulting from the removal of old redundant cabling made good and painted ensuring an impeccable finish.
Re-configured all electrical switchgear within mains cupboard and removed all redundant equipment.

Why Was It A Success

All sub mains to each of the 15 flats were successfully upgraded with only a small amount of disruption and power downtime.
Residents were able to remain within their apartments for the duration of these large-scale electrical works.
The project was delivered on time with no further disruption than was specified in our initial discussions with the residents.
The overall electrical safety of the site was improved.
All builders worked in connection with the electrical upgrade which was carried out in-house and to a high standard.
No snagging was required at the completion of the project and residents were happy with all work carried out by A S Ramsay.

I have worked with AS Ramsay for nearly 15 years on different types of projects and, more recently, with Claudio at this property where they were the sole contractor involved in upgrading the incoming electrical supplies of an eight-storey building. Claudio was excellent throughout, with clear and prompt communication, sensible pricing, good advice on potential variations and delivering quality work. Given the somewhat difficult logistics when the building’s power had to be turned off, the occupants were well informed and work was done precisely to the schedule resulting in no complaints. Overall, an excellent job that came in on budget and finished a few days earlier than programmed.
